Born in 1781 in Brno, capital of Moravia, he counted the " 100 spires of Prague." However, his claim to fame rests on
a long list of publications on the foundations of logic, set theory, and calculus.
The photo points to a Czech text which shows a memorial plaque at his house in
Celetna ulice in Prague' Old Town and his toombstone at Olsany cemetery in Prague.
The name Johan Comenius is the Latin form of the Czech name " Jan Amos Komensky". Komensky was a bishop of the early Moravian Church who introduced important, even radical, ideas into the art of education: Education for both boys and girls, learning through play, learning through pictures, and teaching without corporal punishment. He influenced later reformers such as Maria Montessori and Piaget. In his "Orbis Pictus" textbook (World in Picures) he introduced pictures and pictograms to facililate the learning of Latin.
